Moeletsi Mbeki studied Building, Building Management and Sociology
in England, obtaining an M.A. (Sociology) from the University of
Warwick in 1982. He worked in the construction industry in the United
Kingdom and in Tanzania during the 1970’s.
Mbeki started his journalism career in London in 1979 as a contributor
to Africa, New African and Africa Now Magazines. After joining the
London Freelance Branch of the National Union of Journalists, he
worked for the BBC African Service in 1981 – 1982. During
the rest of the 1980’s he was Senior Journalist in Zimbabwe
Newspapers. For his work in Zimbabwe Newspapers Features Department,
he was awarded the Nieman Fellowship for Excellence in Journalism
by Harvard University in 1989.
After returning to South Africa in 1990, he was Head of Communication
for the Congress of South Africa Trade Unions (COSATU) and Media
Consultant to the African National Congress (ANC). Mr Mbeki is Chairman
of KMM Investments (Pty) Limited, Chairman of Endemol South Africa
(Pty) Limited and a director Comazar (Pty) Ltd, a shareholder in
the Health and Biotech incubator Liseko Holdings and a major stakeholder
in Arelco (Pty) Ltd, a transport infrastructure development company.
Moeletsi is Deputy Chairman of the South African Institute for
International Affairs, an independent think tank based at the University
of the Witwatersrand. |
